Your Rock is special because it genuinely comes form the seashore of Galilee in the Holy Land giving it real historic and religious significance. In the days of Jesus, Galilee was the center of his early ministry and on the seashores of Galilee he walked and called forth his Disciples. As you probably know by looking at the map, the Sea of Galilee (today called Lake Kinneret) is a fresh water body through which the holy water of the Jordan River flows. The water is 150 feet deep and lies 700 feet below sea level. Galilee is at the northern tip of the Great Rift Valley where Africa connects to Asia. The region was formed in prehistoric times when a great land shift on the Earth caused violent earthquakes, volcanic action, and lava flows. Today, just as in the time of Jesus, the hills of Galilee are fertile and the fish in the sea are plentiful. The meaning of Galilee is the "circle of waves." Each day the wind blows down from the mountains and the waters of Galilee begin to wave and stir. Sometimes very strong winds rise up storms upon the sea. It is written that while crossing the sea in a fishing boat Jesus miraculously subdued the storm by calling out "Shalom" (Peace). He told his Disciples to have no fear, to have faith, and using the power of peace to calm the water, they were comforted. It is also written that Jesus walked on the water of Galilee, by the fishing village called Capernaum, at the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. This is the fishing village where Jesus met his first follower, Simon, and renamed him Peter (the word for rock). Today most of the biblical places of Galilee are ruins. Others still remain virtually as they were in the time of Jesus such as Tiberias, located south of Capernaum on the western shore of Galilee. Tiberias was also a fishing village but became an important cultural center for the arts, education, and religious studies after the Romans in 70 A.D. destroyed the holy city of Jerusalem. And Beth Saida, a ruin located on the northeast shore of the Sea of Galilee is where Jesus performed the miracle of the loaves and fishes. When Jesus walked the seashores of Galilee, speaking Hebrew to the masses ("t'ch-u bey'-a-ha-va ou-bey-shalom") he taught the gentiles to live with love in peace, while healing the sick and performing many miracles along his way.
